OVAL’s RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds ensure the community can easily get notifications of the latest OVAL News and updates to the OVAL Repository.
To view OVAL’s feeds in your RSS Reader:
- Copy the URL, or right-click on the shortcut, for the feed that interests you.
- Paste the URL into your Reader and click OK.

The OVAL Repository feed can also be customized to a user’s preferences. The default feed contains the 50 most recent updates to the Repository where updates might include any combination of New Definitions, Definitions with Status Changes, and/or Modified Definitions. For example, a possible default feed could have 3 new, 35 status changes, and 12 modifications.
The Repository feed can be customized by adding the following variables to the RSS URL:
number — the number of records to include in the feed. n is an integer greater than or equal to 1 and less than or equal to 500. Default n is 50.
updateType — the type of updates to include in the RSS feed. updateType can be any of the following values:
modified | — | include only modified records in the feed |
new | — | (default) include only new records in the feed |
status | — | include only status changes in the feed |
class — the class of definitions to include in the RSS feed. class can be any of the following values:
any | — | (default) include any definition records in the feed |
i or I | — | include only inventory definition records in the feed |
c or C | — | include only compliance definition records in the feed |
v or V | — | include only vulnerability definition records in the feed |
p or P | — | include only patch definition records in the feed |
m or M | — | include only miscellaneous definition in the feed |
For example, the following URL will generate a feed that contains only the 10 most recently added new inventory definitions in the Repository:
http://oval.mitre.org/repository/data/rss?number=10&updateType=new&class=i

What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format for sharing and distributing Web content. Using an "RSS Reader" you can receive feeds from our News page and the latest updates to the OVAL Repository.
What is an RSS Reader?
An RSS Reader, also called a News Reader or an RSS Aggregator, is the application used to view articles and other data via RSS feeds. A number of free and commercial RSS Readers are available for download.
How do I add an OVAL RSS feed to my reader?
To subscribe, follow the directions in the Feeds section above. Alternatively, look for the orange graphic on this page and elsewhere on the site and mouse over the image, right-click, and copy the URL (for example, select "Copy Shortcut" for Internet Explorer). Next, select the option in your RSS Reader that adds a new feed or channel, then paste in the URL and click OK.
Can I use OVAL’s RSS feeds in a commercial or non-commercial Web site and/or blog?
Yes, however you will need to receive OVAL’s written consent in order to display our RSS feeds on your Web site.

RSS is a means by which OVAL offers feeds of news and technical updates in XML format to visitors to the OVAL Web site who use RSS Readers. These Terms of Use govern your use of this RSS service.
